The motifs of the ornaments are taken from finds from the time of Kievan Rus in the 10th–13th centuries. Here you can see the zoomorphic elements of those times in the form of two birds stylized as griffins and a large geometric “rosette” between them.
The griffin or griffon is a mythical creature with the body of a lion, the head and wings of an eagle. Also in some stylizations, griffins have a snake tail. The mythical roots of griffins are present in the religions of Egypt and Babylon. They were also a frequent decorative motif in the fine arts of Greece and Rome.
According to the retellings, the Greeks believed that the griffins guard the gold of the ancient Scythians, who lived north of the Black Sea. Therefore, Griffins were often depicted on various objects from the times of Kievan Rus.
The griffin symbolizes two spheres of being – Earth (Lion) and Air (Eagle) and combines mind and strength. Both of these animals have a solar nature which forms the main character of this mythical creature as the symbol of the Sun. Griffin is known for its strength, vigilance and plays the role of a guardian in many myths and legends.
