Siversky carving peculiarity is that its ornaments originated in the Paleolithic era (20-10 thousand years BC) when simple geometric shapes were used in the decor – circles, squares, triangles, spirals, and their combinations.
Since ancient times, these figures were considered as symbols of fertility and meant the harmonious embodiment of the four natural elements: the Sun (Fire), Earth, Water, Air. Gradually they acquired a more expressive character and acquired aesthetic value.
Modern patterns have absorbed a huge variety and motives of Ukrainian ornaments from embroidered shirts, jewelry, and other traditional products.
By decorating in the technique of geometric carving, the artist revives the ancient language of signs, which mankind was fluent in since pre-literary times.
Since the beginning of the 70s of the 20th century, carving has received a new wave of popularization. This work was done by a craftsman who studied with a recognized bearer of the Siverskaya carving tradition.
