Traditional Ukrainian motanka doll with wings and two doves in its arms. The name “Motanka” comes from the verb “reel up”. Since ancient times, the Ukrainian people believed that handmade dolls preserve the energy of the family and protect each of its members.
Therefore, dolls are made according to special rules – without using a needle or a sewing machine. They are simply wound on the base and fastened with a long red thread. Not only in Ukrainian but also in other cultures, it is believed that the red thread protects against negative energy, a bad, envious look. And its length symbolizes long life.
